Dear Colleague:

For the past 30 years, the IEEE University/Government/Industry Microelectronics Symposium has brought together leading engineering educators and researchers from labs around the world to promote increased collaboration and partnerships in the area of microelectronics and micro/nano-fabrication. UGIM'03 is sponsored by the IEEE Electron Device Society. This year, nearly 100 papers from 38 universities, 15 corporate and government labs, and 5 countries will be presented. Attached please find the advance program and registration information for the 15th Biennial IEEE UGIM Symposium in Boise, ID, June 29-July 2nd. The early registration deadline is May 30th. You may register by mail, FAX, or by electronic payment on-line at http://coen.boisestate.edu/ugim03.

On Sunday afternoon, June 29 at 2:00pm, the traditional Lab Manager's Workshop will be held in the Micron Engineering Center, followed by tours of BSU's Idaho Microfabrication Laboratory. This year's workshop is titled "Microlab Management: How I do it" by Katalin Voros, UC Berkeley's Microlab manager, covering efficient lab management practices and discussions on issues common to such facilities. The UGIM'03 opening session will begin on Mon. June 30 at 8:30am in the BSU Student Union Jordan Ballroom, with keynote talks by Dr. T.J. King from UC Berkeley, Mr. Steve Appleton, Micron's CEO, and Idaho's senior Senator, Larry Craig. This year's UGIM will present nearly 100 technical papers, in 15 technical sessions, ending at noon on Wed. July 2nd. On Tuesday evening, July 1st, the symposium participants and their guests will be treated to a Basque cultural banquet in the heart of Boise's Basque Block. A catered dinner with authentic Basque cuisine as well as a grand performance of the famous Basque Oinkari dancers will be enjoyed by all. Please sign up for these extra events on your registration form.

UGIM'03 follows the 2003 Device Research Conference in Salt Lake City the previous week. In between, is the annual Boise River Festival (June 27-29) which is a free three-day citywide celebration. You and your family can enjoy a daily hot air balloon rally, free music of all genres on seven stages, a day-time parade featuring helium balloon characters, and a sparkling night-time parade of lighted floats. The weekend wraps up with an outdoor concert on Sunday evening followed by a giant choreographed fireworks display over Ann Morrison Park. A block of rooms has been reserved for only $89/night in the grand Grove Hotel in downtown Boise, within easy walking distance of the University and Boise's historic shopping & dining district. Rooms are also available adjacent to the Boise State campus at the University Inn for $49/hight. Please contact the hotel directly for reservations, and mention the IEEE UGIM Symposium for the reduced rates.

You are cordially invited to attend UGIM'03. Looking forward to seeing you in Boise in June!

Stephen Parke, General Chair UGIM'03
