Greetings,
First of all, I would like to thank all of those who responded to my last request on
thermocouple wire gauge. With respect to putting the wires into the diffusion tube, we
would like to insert the wire, with ceramic insulators, into a quartz tube for protection.
The question is: Do we use an open or closed end quartz tube?
The second question is with respect to the wire, most people agree that we should use
type S or type R, .020" diameter. Has anyone used type K thermocouple wire for this
purpose. I have found some 16 gauge type K wire from McMaster-Carr that is roughly 1/5
the price of type S or R. Has anyone used this type of wire with any success. According
to Omega, this wire has an upper limit of ~1070 C. I am assuming that we can exceed that
temperature (1150 C, max temp), for a short time.
Thanks again for the help and support. All advice and suggestions are much appreciated.
Regards,
Neil Peters
