Professor Jesús del Alamo to lead MTL

Dear MTL Students, Staff, and Faculty members:

It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Professor Jesús del Alamo as the new Director of the MIT Microsystems Technology Laboratories, effective October 28, 2013. MTL supports over 700 investigators and $80M of research from across the Institute. The lab is helping to define the future of device fabrication, integrated circuits and systems, photonics, and MEMS, as well as molecular and nanotechnologies. The lab's activities and mission contribute significantly to MIT's standing as a hub of innovation and invention in electrical engineering, energy, medical engineering, and advanced manufacturing. I look forward to Jesús's creative and energetic input as MTL continues to evolve, especially under the Institute's newly announced Innovation Initiative.

Jesús leads a research program on silicon and compound semiconductor transistor technologies for RF, microwave, and millimeter wave applications. He has done research on a range of transistor technologies and other electronic devices in a variety of material systems, including solar cells and quantum-effect devices. His current research interests focus on the physics, technology, modeling and reliability of new III-V compound semiconductor field-effect transistors for future logic applications. He is also interested in gallium nitride transistors for RF power amplification and power switching applications. In addition, Jesus is the founder of the iLab Project that pioneered the technology and pedagogy of online laboratories for science and engineering education. iLabs are real experimental facilities that can be accessed through the internet. This project developed several laboratory set ups for electrical engineering education that have been used by thousands of students from around the world to carry out a variety of device and circuit characterization assignments.

Jesús joined MIT in 1988 and holds degrees from Polytechnic University of Madrid (1980) and Stanford University ('83 MS, '85 Ph.D.). He is Donner Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow. He teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses in electronics, electron devices and circuits, and advanced semiconductor device physics and has received several teaching and achievement awards at MIT, including the Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the H. E. Edgerton Junior Faculty Achievement Award, the Louis D. Smullin Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Class of 1960 Innovation in Education Award, and the Amar Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching. Jesús is a former National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator and was awarded the 2012 Intel Outstanding Researcher Award in Emerging Research Devices and the SRC 2012 Technical Excellence Award. In 2012, he was awarded the IEEE 2012 Electron Devices Society Education Award "for pioneering contributions to the development of online laboratories for microelectronics education on a worldwide scale." He is a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Engineering, and a fellow of the IEEE. Jesús and Sophie, his wife, live in Lincoln and attempt to keep up with their six young-adult children while trying to enjoy travel, cooking, and relaxing in their back yard with a good book.

I also offer my sincere thanks to Vladimir Bulović for his exceptional leadership of MTL. In his new role as Associate Dean for Innovation, Vladimir will continue to work closely with Jesús and the MTL community.
