MTL Fall 2014 Newsletter: Director Greetings

September 15, 2014

Greetings from the Microsystems Technology Laboratories at MIT! I am pleased to send you this newsletter with exciting research highlights, news and updates on recent and upcoming activities in MTL.

As you can see in the many research highlights collected here, it has been a very busy and fruitful six months since the last newsletter. The scope of the research that takes place in MTL continues to expand. The newsletter reports on notable findings in, among other things, optoelectronics, organic devices, quantum-dot solar cells, innovative fabrication processes for graphene, and new techniques for malaria diagnosis using magnetic nanoparticles! It brings me great satisfaction to see how the facilities and services of MTL continue to expand their reach and impact across the MIT campus, and beyond, and to new disciplines.

A more comprehensive view of the research that is taking place in MTL can be gained from the 2014 Annual Research Report that we just published. There is a link to it in the newsletter. This report contains 149 abstracts of current research projects over an amazingly broad intellectual front.

This newsletter also includes a feature story about the launch of MIT.nano, a new facility for micro- and nano-scale research to be built at the heart of campus. MIT.nano is planned to open its doors in the Fall of 2018. As described in more detail in the enclosed story, this new building represents a major expansion of the experimental facilities dedicated at MIT to nanotechnology, in its broadest interpretation. It will impact fields as diverse as energy, life sciences, quantum science and engineering, electronics, photonics and manufacturing. MTL has played and continues to play a leading role in the planning and design of this new facility. It is with great excitement and trepidation that we are starting to think about the migration of our shared laboratories in Bldg. 39 to the new quarters starting in 2018.

Finally, I want to highlight here our upcoming Symposium to mark the 30th anniversary of MTL scheduled for the end of October. With this Symposium we wish to celebrate the numerous accomplishments of MTL over the last 30 years and to share our dreams about the great potential of micro-and nano-technologies for years to come. The nickname that we have selected, "MTL>30", serves to emphasize our firm focus on the bright future that is ahead of us. There is a link to the Symposium website in the newsletter. There you will find the program and registration information. I am hoping that many of you will take advantage of this singular anniversary to come to visit us. I am personally looking forward to greeting many of you at the end of October at MIT.

Warmest regards,
Jesús A. del Alamo
