I am delighted to announce that Prof. Jeehwan Kim with dual appointments in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has become a core member of MTL. Professor Jeehwan Kim joined MIT in September of 2015.
Prof. Kim's group focuses on innovation in nanotechnology for electronic/photonic/energy applications. In particular, he is pursuing the development of an epitaxial random access memory (ERAM) structure for neuromorphic computing. In addition, his group is developing a graphene-based layer transfer technology which offers infinitive growths and transfers of high quality single-crystalline semiconductor films on single-crystal graphene. This will enable the low cost fabrication of high performance electronic/photonic/photovoltaic devices. Also, utilizing their expertise in the van der Waals epitaxy technique, Prof. Kim's group is developing techniques to fabricate single-crystalline monolayer 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides for extremely flexible inorganic electronic/photonic devices.
Professor Kim received his B.S. from Hongik University and his M.S. from Seoul National University, both in South Korea. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 2008. All his degrees are in Materials Science. After graduation and before joining MIT, he was a Research Staff Member at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. At IBM he was named a "Master Inventor" for his prolific creativity and commercialization of his research. He is an inventor of 140 issued/pending US patents and an author of 30 journal articles.
