Safety Rules

  1. Never work alone.
  2. Call 100 in case of life-threatening or fire emergency.
  3. Call the lab staff or 3-1500 to report and request help for a malfunction or non-life-threatening emergency.
  4. You must be trained and qualified by an MTL staff member before using any piece of equipment in the labs.
  5. Safety glasses are to be worn in the labs at all times. If you wear contact lenses, you must wear safety glasses over them.
  6. Feet and legs must be covered under your cleanroom garments. Sandals, shorts, open-toe shoes and/or skirts are not allowed. Your skin must be covered for your own protection.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the hazards associated with the chemicals in use in the labs by reading the MSDS sheets which are located at the entrances to the ICL, TRL, and EML. Some of the chemicals in use may include select carcinogens, reproductive toxins, and substances with a high degree of acute or chronic toxicity.
  8. Read the MTL Chemical Hygiene Plan (PDF file).
  9. Locate and familiarize yourself with the MIT Emergency Response Guide flipchart. They are posted in close proximity to the lab entrances and/or lab telephones.
  10. Be aware of all correct working and emergency procedures in the lab. If you don't know, ask!

Building 39 Evacuation Procedure

  1. Exit through the nearest door.
  2. Do not remove your cleanroom garments.
  3. Exit the building using the nearest stairway.
  4. Do not use the elevators.
  5. Proceed to ground floor lobby of Building 13. An MTL staff member will ask you to check in and sign your name to a list.

    In the event that Building 13 is also under evacuation, meet at Building 34 in the ground floor lobby (Vassar Street entrance).
  6. Do not enter Building 39 until you are given permission by an authorized person.
