Will is a recipient of the 2013 Early Career Award from the Department of Energy.

Across the Office of Science divisions, 61 awards were made out of about 770 proposals that went out for peer-review. The award is $750,000 over 5 years, and will support the group’s experimental efforts to develop a deeper understanding of interfacial electronic processes in next-generation solar cells.

On April 10^th, Lisa attended the conference “Women Inspire Innovation”, organized by the Swiss Embassy in Washington D.C.  She was invited to this event by ETH Zürich because she founded the organization “LIMES” (Ladies In Mechanical and Electrical Studies, www.limes.ethz.ch) for women in mechanical and electrical engineering at ETH.

At the conference she listened to keynote speeches by inspiring Swiss and American personalities including Rebecca Spyke Keiser, Senior Manager for Women@NASA, Cora B. Marrett, Acting Director of the NSF, Professor Kathryn Hess Bellwald of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and Shelly Kapoor Collins, CEO of Enscient Corporation and  National Co-Chair of Technology for Obama (see photo).

The Tisdale Lab welcomes Lisa Poulikakos!  Lisa is a visiting student from the Norris group at ETH Zürich, and will be completing her Master’s thesis in our lab.  Welcome Lisa!

Tisdale Lab collaborator QD Vision is the first QD company to have their technology incorporated in a mass-marketed consumer product: QD Vision’s luminescent quantum dots are at the heart of Sony’s new “Triluminous” color technology, which will appear in next year’s line of Bravia high-definition TVs. The Tisdale Lab welcomes its newest members, Aaron Goodman and Liza Lee! Aaron is a first-year PhD student in Physical Chemistry who plans to focus on development of a novel ultrafast nonlinear optical spectroscopy technique. Liza is a first-year PhD student in Chemical Engineering who plans to pursue a combined computational and spectroscopic approach to understanding stochastic excitonic processes in nanostructured materials. Welcome to both!

Jolene was selected to receive the Department of Chemistry Award for Outstanding Teaching for 2011-2012. The award includes an engraved silver tray and a cash prize. Congratulations, Jolene!

As construction nears completion, riggers spend two days maneuvering more than 6000 lbs of optical tables into the new laser lab. The 150 ft² floating table system will support vibration-sensitive optical experiments in near-field scanning optical microscopy, ultrafast spectroscopy, and nonlinear optical imaging.

 Local middle school science teacher Michael Dower, who spent the summer with us through the Center for Materials Science and Engineering’s Research Experience for Teachers program, recently presented his work on QD thin film processing at the CMSE summer poster session. He is photographed here next to his poster.
